Evolution of an afterglow with a hard electron spectrum

چکیده
Diffusive shock acceleration theory suggests that the " universal " energy spectrum of electrons with a power-law index p ≈ 2.3, commonly used to model GRB afterglows, cannot extend below an electron lorentz factor γ e equal to the bulk lorentz factor of the blast wave multiplied by the ratio of proton and electron masses. We suggest that the electron energy distribution has a slope p < 2 below this limit, down to an appropriate γ m. A two-slope spectrum such as this provides a good model for the afterglow of GRB010222.

BeppoSAX spectrum of GRB971214: evidence of a substantial energy output during afterglow
We report the X/γ-ray spectrum of GRB971214 and of its afterglow. The afterglow was measured few hours after the main event and for an elapsed time of more than two days. The measure of this GRB and afterglow is relevant due to its extreme, cosmological distance (z=3.42). The prompt event shows a hard photon spectrum, consistent with a broken power law with photon indices ΓX ≈0.1 below ∼20 keV ...
متن کامل1 Optical Photometry of the GRB 010222 Afterglow
The optical afterglow of GRB 010222 was observed using the recently installed 2-m telescope at the Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle, and the telescopes at the Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur, beginning ∼ 0.6 day after the detection of the event. The results based on these photometric observations combined with others reported in the literature are presented in this paper. The R band ligh...

متن کاملSignatures of a Thermal Component in Shock-Accelerated Electrons in GRBs
Recent particle-in-cell simulations suggest that a large fraction of the energy dissipated in a relativistic shock is deposited into a thermal distribution of electrons that is connected to the high-energy power-law tail. Here, we explore the observational implications of such a mixed thermal-nonthermal particle distribution for the afterglow and prompt emission of gamma-ray bursts. When the th...
متن کاملA Jet Model with a Hard Electron Distribution for the Afterglow of Grb 000301c
The parameters of the GRB 000301c afterglow are determined within the usual framework of synchrotron emission from relativistic ejecta, through fits to the available radio-to-optical data. It is found that 1) the jet energy after the GRB phase is ∼ 3 × 10 erg, 2) the initial opening angle of the jet is ∼ 13, 3) the medium that decelerates the afterglow has a density ∼ 25 cm, 4) the power-law di...
